Didn't get the grades? Every option explained

Missing your grades is not the end of anything. There are more routes forward than most students realise, and several of them are open on the same day.

Step 1, do not decide anything in the first hour

Results mornings are emotional. Read your statement, take a breath, and only then start making calls. Nothing important expires in sixty minutes.

Step 2, check how close you were

  • Ask your exams officer for paper-level marks.
  • Compare them to published grade boundaries for your board.
  • If you are within a couple of marks, request a review of marking, your school submits it for you.
  • Deadlines are tight, usually within a few weeks, so ask on the day.

Step 3, your realistic options

  • Clearing, for university applicants, with thousands of courses available.
  • Autumn or November resits, especially for English and Maths.
  • A different but related course with lower entry requirements.
  • An apprenticeship, T-Level or BTEC route.
  • A planned gap year with a stronger application next cycle.

Step 4, build a better plan than last time

Most missed grades come down to unfamiliar exam-style questions rather than a lack of knowledge. Practice papers under timed conditions are the fastest way to close that gap, plus honest weekly logging of what you actually understand.
